WHO GOES TO BOSS
BOSS Students
Students come from all walks of life to attend our BOSS courses: firefighters and college students, nurses and musicians, engineers and mechanics, helicopter pilots and retirees, attorneys and librarians and teachers, the list goes on. The BOSS experience doesn’t attract a specific demographic, but it does attract a certain kind of person.
The people who choose to come to BOSS are adventurous, open-minded, and curious. They want to be pushed out of their comfort zone and they’re willing to explore – both the wilderness and themselves.
Nationality
BOSS courses serve students from around the world. Although many of our students come to us from within the United States, most courses include one or more students from abroad. Students come to us from Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
Age
Age ranges from 18 at minimum to 70+ at the upper end. The median age is probably about 34. Average age on longer courses, like the 28-day Field course, is usually a bit younger. We care more about a student’s determination and willingness to learn than their age.
Gender
Consistent with trends in wilderness adventure education in general, BOSS courses often have more men on them than women – approximately 80% men / 20% women. BOSS would like to achieve more gender parity and efforts toward that end are ongoing.
Outdoor Experience
People with no outdoor experience at all come to BOSS and are as successful here as anyone else. We will teach you everything you need to know to survive and thrive on our BOSS courses.
